Trafalgar Square in London, flanked by the National Gallery and South African embassy, is adorned each year by an magificent Christmas tree, a gift from the city of Oslo. Is it forgivable that my niece was expecting to see a statue of Neson Mandela, not Admiral Lord Nelson, atop Nelson'c column. She is only 19!

Norwegian Gift

A gift arrives each year
From across the sea
A gift from the people of Oslo
An annual gift of a Christmas tree

Given with gratitude
To stand in Trafalgar square
Received with pride
By those of us who care

A symbol of friendship
Given to us each Christmas
A token as a gift of thanks
Sent from Norway for us
